Austin, TX - Today, the House of Representatives was scheduled to debate House Bill 4, the unprecedented mid-decade redistricting effort by House Republicans at the behest of President Trump to help secure a Republican majority in Congress going into the 2026 cycle.

I am a small business owner of our family tortilla factory and an attorney. Our tortilla factory is going through extensive renovations that require my full attention, especially as we all navigate the challenges of today's difficult economic environment. At its core, this redistricting is not only wrong, but sets a bad precedent for other states to follow; Democrat and Republican alike. I have been in communication with Speaker Burrows and House Democratic Leadership who are aware of this.

Americans are tired of partisan politics and division - these redistricting efforts will only fuel those divisions. I respect my democrat colleagues taking a stand against this effort. I also acknowledge we have a different way of fighting. It is my personal opinion that my duties are to the voters that elected me to be their voice in Austin, regardless of their political party.

Since elected to the Texas House, I have never broken quorum, because I owe it to be the voice of communities across Central South Texas and West Texas who have too often been left behind. To that end, it is regrettable that this Special Session was called with the focus of providing relief to the devastating floods that engulfed Central Texas, claiming the lives of fellow Texans, and instead replaced with this redistricting effort. Taking care of Texans should be first and foremost.

Let me be clear: I unequivocally oppose this sudden and politically-motivated power grab to redraw our congressional lines.
