Austin, TX - Today, the Texas House approved final passage of SB 2878, a sweeping and transformative judicial court overhaul bill that I was proud to stand alongside Chairman Jeff Leach as Joint-Sponsor. Currently, the 293ª Judicial District Attorney's office serves Dimmit, Maverick, and Zavala Counties. Throughout the 89h Legislative Session, I was fighting to ensure Maverick County had its own Judicial District Attorney office to improve judicial efficiency, enhance public safety, and increase access to justice for Maverick County residents.

With the passage of SB 2878, we secured this victory that will take effect January 1st, 2029, and will allow for the campaign process in 2028 to elect a District Attorney to serve Maverick County exclusively. As Maverick County and our region continue to grow, it is imperative that our community have the adequate representation and efficiency to meet our needs. This bill will also provide Dimmit and Zavala Counties with the opportunity to select a District Attorney that will be exclusive to those two counties which will bring better judicial efficiency and access to additional border prosecution grant funding. More importantly, both the 293 Judicial District Court (Hon. Maribel Flores) and the 365 Judicial District Court (Hon. Amado Abascal) will continue to share jurisdiction and preside over cases filed in Dimmit, Maverick, and Zavala Counties.

Representative Morales said, "For years, Maverick County has shared district attorney office resources across multiple counties, often facing backlogs and delays that strain our local judicial system. By passing SB 2878, we are transforming the structure of our judicial district attorney office and courts, including establishing the 293ª Judicial District Attorney office solely for Maverick County residents- fostering faster case resolutions and more efficient court operations.

I am thankful for the work done by Chairman Jeff Leach, Senator Brian Hughes, and my colleagues in the Legislature for working with me to secure this major victory for Maverick County and our region."
